Corporate Profile Mission Statement Our mission is to be the most organized and influential Trade Union in Nigeria by upholding the core values of our existence as a Union to ensure that our members and indeed, all stakeholders in the Oil and Gas Industry continue to promote a salubrious partnership in the industry. Overview The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) is one of the 24 Senior Staff Associations in Nigeria. It was formally registered as a Trade Union on 15th August, 1978. The Union has come a long way since then. Despite the debilitating interregnum of military take-over of the union from 1994 - 1998, it has risen like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes of oppression and harassment by the military dictatorship. It has its National Headquarters presently at 288, Ikorodu Road, Anthony, Lagos. Zonal Offices are in Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna. PENGASSAN has continued to be in the vanguard of protecting the rights of its members and promoting harmonious industrial relations between its branches and the various managements on one hand and the government on the other. Membership Membership of PENGASSAN is drawn from senior and middle management employees in various oil and gas companies in Nigeria. Each company registered by the National Secretariat constitutes a branch of PENGASSAN. Currently, we have 98 branches with total members of 20,100. For effective administration, the country is divided into four zones - Lagos, Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna - with offices to cater for members in those areas. Structure Like every other trade union, the highest organ of the Association is the National Delegates' Conference (NDC). The NDC is made up of members of the National Executive Council (NEC), the Principal national officers and staff; and delegates from all branches. Next in hierarchy is the National Executive Council (NEC) which is made up of branch chairmen of all the 98 branches plus the principal National Officers and staff. Next is the Central Working Committee (CWC). It is made up of the 13 elected national officers, General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary. It is the Board of the Association. PENGASSAN & the Future The fundamental reason for the existence of trade unions is to help workers achieve a better life. Individual/ununionised workers remain at the mercy of their employers and suffer great deprivations. PENGASSAN remains committed to improving the quality of its members through the instrumentality of collective bargaining. Organising the unorganised in the oil and gas industry remains a major task. Together with our sister union, NUPENG (National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers), we remain the only voice of organised workers in the petroleum industry in Nigeria. And as the petroleum remains the mainstay of the Nigerian economy, we must speak not only for our members but also for the Nigerian people. |
